April Adventures in High-Conflict Training

This April, 2015, may have been the busiest month yet for High Conflict Institute speakers. I spoke at 9 events in 6 states. Megan Hunter spoke in Ohio, Michael Lomax spoke in British Columbia Canada and Shawn Skillin spoke with me in Los Angeles. John Edwards got ready for Iowa in May and Georgi DiStefano got ready to speak in San Diego in May. I gave a 45-minute explanation of high-conflict personalities and how to guide them to investors in high-tech innovations at a conference in San Diego. Then I immediately headed to the airport to Kansas City, where I gave a 2-day training to mediators – primarily family mediators – in methods for the “highest conflict cases.” 170 mediators attended from seven states, primarily Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Colorado. (See photos) I received a standing ovation at the end, which was the first time I recall that happening! I think people were just relieved to know that there really are methods that can calm clients and reduce stress for mediators at the same time.

Then I flew straight to Atlanta, to give a full day training to Ombudspersons for universities and businesses from around the country, teaching methods for resolving workplace disputes from our new book It’s All Your Fault at Work. Then back to California for a few days, where I gave a full day training to workplace coaches for an aerospace company in L.A. Then I drove to Orange County where I introduced Family Court Services counselors and family law judges to our New Ways for Families online class for reducing high-conflict separation and divorce conflicts by teaching four big skills before the big decisions are made (flexible thinking, managed emotions, moderate behaviors and checking yourself). Then back to L.A. airport for a pre-conference session at the CP-CAL (collaborative practice – California) annual conference – of course, teaching skills from our New Ways for Families model adapted for collaborative practitioners. The following week I appeared briefly on two mornings by Skype for a New Ways for Families Training 2-day training in the Austin Texas area by two of our New Ways trainers: Tammy Corrales and Debbie Lyons. Then I headed out to the airport for Chicago, where I gave a training to Chief Judges for the Social Security Administration. Ending at lunchtime, I flew to New York and drove a rental car upstate to a family mediation conference – in time for dinner! The next two days I gave trainings on New Ways for Mediation – about the structure for mediators and the skills for clients.

Then I flew home for a week in one place and visitation with my wife. We agreed that this past April is not the way I want to live each month. On the other hand, we also agreed that a lot of people probably benefitted from gaining this knowledge about how to help people deal with high-conflict personalities in their lives at home and at work. I very much appreciate this opportunity to have conversations with so many people interested in our methods and sincerely helping people with high-conflict personalities and those who are often frustrated around them. Now for some sleep!
